My digital camera.
The shutter breaking was the best thing that could have happened to me. I decided I would just pick up my older Canon EOS 3 and throw film in it all summer, rather than spend money to fix one more thing. I am falling in love all over again. Fast. Hard. And I realize that digital format, even a decent machine like mine, is really just a glorified Polaroid sometimes. It offers instant gratification. A form of visual masturbation. I shoot multiple exposures, over and over, because its possible, not necessarily because it results in better quality work.
After 5 years of using a plastic compact flash card, I’m rediscovering film as the elaborate, painstaking methodical process it always was. Film is more intricate. More complex. More exciting. Ritualistic. Like an intense, ongoing love affair. Like deep, slow, sensuous kissing. It takes more effort, but the results…
So worth it.
